Help & Documentation
Everything you need to get the most out of OneshotFX.
Getting Started
Installing OneshotFX
- Open the Chrome Web Store listing and click Add to Chrome.
- When prompted, click Add extension.
- The OneshotFX icon appears in your Chrome toolbar. Pin it for quick access (Extensions → Pin).
- A welcome tab opens automatically — you're ready to record.
First time? OneshotFX needs permission to capture your screen and optional microphone access. These are requested the first time you start a recording, not at install time.
Recording
Starting a recording
- Click the OneshotFX icon in your Chrome toolbar.
- Choose your audio source: toggle Microphone and/or System Audio as needed.
- Choose a quality preset (High is recommended for most cases).
- Click the large Record button.
- Chrome's native screen picker appears — select Entire Screen for full-screen recording.
- Click Share in the picker.
Tip: Select Entire Screen (not a window or tab) to capture your cursor across all apps and get the best click-tracking accuracy.
Recording settings
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Quality | Low (720p / 2.5 Mbps) · Medium (1080p / 5 Mbps) · High (1080p / 8 Mbps) · Ultra (native / 12 Mbps) |
| Microphone | Capture your voice alongside the screen. Permission is requested on first use. |
| System Audio | Check "Share audio" in Chrome's screen picker when prompted. |
| Click Tracking | Records every mouse click and keyboard action so the editor can animate them and drive Auto-Zoom. |
| Max Duration | Automatically stops the recording after the chosen time limit (1–5 minutes). |
How many recordings are stored?
OneshotFX stores the 3 most recent recordings locally in your browser's IndexedDB (your videos never leave your device). When a 4th recording is saved the oldest one is deleted automatically. Open the Editor and export any recording you want to keep before recording over it.
The Editor
Open the editor from the popup (Open Editor button) or directly from the post-recording notification. The editor opens in a full browser tab and works entirely offline — no uploads required.

Effects
Auto-Zoom
Auto-Zoom watches your recorded click (and keyboard) events and automatically zooms the camera in when you interact with something, then pulls back when activity pauses. It produces a smooth follow-cam effect without you having to manually place any keyframes.
Requirements: Click Tracking must have been enabled during the recording.
Presets
| Preset | Feel |
|---|---|
| Slow | Gentle, cinematic — great for walkthroughs |
| Default | Balanced speed — good for most demos |
| Fast | Snappy transitions — good for technical content |
| Snappy | Instant zoom — punchiest feel, best for short clips |
Auto-Zoom and manual Zoom Segments cannot be active at the same time. Adding a Zoom Segment automatically disables Auto-Zoom for that project.
Zoom Segments
Zoom Segments are draggable bars you place on the Zoom track of the timeline. Each segment zooms in at startTime, holds at full scale, then zooms back out at endTime.
To add a segment: Click + Zoom in the timeline toolbar, or press Z while the Zoom tool is active.
Segment properties
| Property | Description |
|---|---|
| Scale | Zoom multiplier — 1.2× to 4.0× |
| Zoom In | Duration of the zoom-in animation (ms) |
| Zoom Out | Duration of the zoom-out animation (ms) |
| Pan Smoothness | How quickly the camera follows the cursor (ms lag) |
| Easing | Animation curve: Linear, Ease In, Ease Out, Ease In-Out, Spring |
| Focus Point | Lock the camera to a fixed position instead of following the cursor |
Focus Point: Enable it and click Pick on canvas to lock the camera to a specific spot on the video — useful when recording without click tracking. Fine-tune with the X and Y sliders (0 = left/top, 100% = right/bottom).
Crop Segments
Crop Segments apply a time-ranged crop — useful for zooming into a corner of the screen or changing the aspect ratio for a specific section.
To add a segment: Click + Crop in the timeline toolbar.
Aspect ratio presets: Free · 16:9 · 9:16 · 4:3 · 1:1 · 4:5
Skip Segments (Trim)
Skip Segments mark sections you want to cut from the final video. They are excluded during export and are non-destructive — the original footage is always preserved.
To add a segment: Click + Skip in the timeline toolbar.
Click Animations
When click tracking was enabled during recording, every mouse click appears as a dot on the Clicks track. Choose from these animation styles:
| Style | Description |
|---|---|
| Ring | A clean expanding ring — the default |
| Ripple | Ring plus a filled inner dot that fades out |
| Pulse | A solid circle that pulses and fades |
| Spotlight | A soft radial glow around the click |
| Cursor Highlight | A persistent highlight that follows the cursor tip |
Keyboard events are recorded for Auto-Zoom triggers only — they do not render a visible click animation overlay.
Background Mode
Background Mode gives your recording a Screen Studio–style appearance: the recorded screen sits as a centred inset window on a decorative background, with a rounded border and drop shadow.
Background styles: Gradient (two-color) · Solid color
Controls: Padding, border radius, shadow blur, shadow color, gradient angle.
Export
- Click Export in the editor toolbar or press
Ctrl/Cmd + E. - Choose a Format and Quality.
- Click Export and wait for the progress bar to complete.
- Your browser's download dialog saves the file to disk.
All processing happens entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your video is never uploaded to any server.
| Format | Best for |
|---|---|
| MP4 (H.264) | Universal — plays everywhere, best compatibility |
| WebM (VP9) | Web embedding, Notion, Loom alternatives — smaller files |
| Quality | Resolution | Bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| Medium | 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| High | 1080p | 8 Mbps |
| Ultra | Native | 12 Mbps |
